József Haui was born in Komló, 1952. He finished his high school studies in the Secondary School of Visual Arts as a ceramic artist in 1973. As a colleague of the Kecskemét atelier of Pannonia Film Studio, he also climbed the ranks, from being a colorist to directorship. He contributed to several popular series (e.g. Hungarian Folktales; Next, Please!), worked in features (e.g. Time Masters; Tiny Heroes; A Monkey’s Tale), and in commercials. His best known works are the series Water Spider - Wonder Spider I–III, with a role of lead animator then co-director.
Since 1986, he works as a freelancer. He continues to work as a director (Bill Body; The Ketchup Vampires; The Worldwide Adventures of the Wandering Mice), while he also made two feature film storyboards for foreign commissions (The Jungle Kid; Pearl of the Desert). Haui illustrated about 200 books of youth literature. He is drawing comics since 1983. The first ones were made after the series Water Spider Wonder Spider, then he published two comic albums after the works of sci-fi writer István Nemere. His best known comic series is titled Bucó, Szetti, Tacsi. Haui also has been illustrating the 60-year-old children magazine Dörmögő Dömötör for 15 years. His work was recognized by the Association of Hungarian Comic Book Artists, with the most prestigious Hungarian prize, the Korcsmáros Pál Award.
