Hungarian poet Sándor Kányádi wrote for the 25th jubilee of Kaláka Ensemble:
“Kaláka Ensemble hands over poems on a fine, unmistakable musical platter to their audience. They do not force their music on the poems – rather, they evoke poetry’s innate music, which was exiled into books since Gutenberg, born and condemned to «mute heart», to play the «original tune» according to their own interpretation."
Kaláka was formed in Budapest, 1969. They sing poems and play folk music in their own arrange. Their music is diverse, and carries various styles, thankfully to poems. The band’s unique sound comes from the four voices, and the simultaneous use of classical and folk music instruments.
Members of the ensemble:
Gábor BECZE – double bass, guitar
Dániel GRYLLUS – recorders, zither, pan flute, clarinet, taragot
Vilmos GRYLLUS – cello, guitar, charango, cobza, Jew’s harp
Balázs RADVÁNYI – mandolin, 12-strings guitar, ukulele, cuatro, viola, kalimba
