In Pécs, animation film production already started in the 1970s under the direction of Csaba Varga, in the environment of Ixilon Film Studios, beginners at that time. Professional film production started in 1979, in Pannonia Film Studio’s subsidiary of Pécs, the latter still operating as a private company (from 1990: Funny Film Kft., from 2013: Cartoon Garage Kft.) The founders and influential artists of Pécs’s animation industry include names like Csaba Varga (Faded in Time, Waltz, The Luncheon, Augusta series), Tamás Baksa (Take it Easy, Trombi and the Fire Fairy), Ágnes Pásztor (Seven Deer Snake Brothers), Nándor Markó (Star Parade). From the art group of the Pécs Stúdió, the oeuvre of Károly Kismányoky (Martyn, Bauhaus), Ferenc Ficzek (Exits Left Behind, Cube), Kálmán Szijjártó (Alfonshow, Sió, Balance in Nature) are the hallmarks of the studio.
In the 1980s, two directors from Budapest also joined the production n Pécs: Tamás Szabó Sipos (Explaining the Mechanism, SI Unit, Family and Other Social Circles). Tibor Hernádi, co-director of Dragon and Slippers, and technical director of Les Maîtres du Temps, and Felix the Cat.
From 1990, under the direction of Tibor Hernádi and Tamás Baksa, the Pécs studio contributed to series as The Little Flying Bears, Bingo and Bessi, Spirou & Fantasio and Rubbish the Cat; and the well-known Red Bull commercials. Productions include feature films like The Seventh Brother, or Santa Claus and the Magic Drum.
Until 2012, the following productions were made under the artistic direction of Tibor Hernádi: Ned’s Newt, Little Lulu (Cinar Productions), The Fantastic Flying Journey (Two Sides Television Ltd.), Felix the Rabbit and Pettson & Findus (Loonland Studio). The hand-drawn commercials of Red Bull energy drink – retaining traditional technique – are made in the Cartoon Garage studio since 2013.
On the occasion of the jubilee year, the exhibition and this short brief demonstrate that the studio of Pécs played an important role in Hungarian animation film industry.
