Marcell Jankovics: Toldi

The 14th KAFF takes place at eight venues and offers several additional programmes for visitors. Masterclasses will be held during a festival: Marcell Jankovics will hold a ‘work in progress’ presentation of the series Toldi in the making; Michaël Dudok de Wit will introduce us to his work in animation; Gábor Csupó shares his experiences on American animation, and István Orosz tells about his career, leading to animation filmmaking. Exhibitions will be held about the following subjects: the 40th anniversary of Pécs Animation Studio, the chalk drawings of László Csáki, the children’s book illustrations of Éva Katinka Bognár, and the comics of József Haui. KAFF also awaits its audience with book launches: The history of the Kecskemét studio is presented in the newest volume by Zoltán Varga: Hungarian Animators, Part I. ; followed by the reportage book of Tamás Kollarik and József Fülöp, Hungarian Animation Authors, Part I. The book includes interviews with authors and professionals such as Marcell Jankovics, Ferenc Rófusz, Ferenc Mikulás, Géza M. Tóth and Réka Bucsi. The youngest fans of animation can try out animation techniques at the animation workshops of Primanima. During the five days of festival, the 50-year-old band Kaláka will give a concert, including the folk band Muzsikás and African ensemble Ballet Senegal, with its members of Senegalese and Guinean dancers.

This time the guest country will be Africa, with traditions of animation reaching back to 1935. Selected films of Frenkel Brothers are screened, with the Walt Disney-like main character Mish-Mish Efendi, with examples from African stop-motion animation, and the African animation film production after 2000.

This year Hungarian-Japanese diplomatic relationships celebrate their 150th anniversary, with a 35-year-old relationship between Hungary and Japan – similarly to KAFF, the Hiroshima Festival also started in 1985. On the occasion of the 35th jubilee, organizers prepare a screening showing contemporary Japanese animation.
